About mike

I want to give back to the community that my family has been a part of for four generations.

Mayor Mike Thoms is a proud life-long resident of Rock Island, Father, Grandfather, and Small Business Leader. Throughout his life, Mike has developed partnerships and businesses that aim to provide solutions to families across Western Illinois and beyond.

Mike worked his way up at the family business, Thoms-Proestler Company (TPC), for 30 years. Originally started by his great-grandfather in 1905, TPC grew to become one of the 25 largest food-service distributors in the nation, with a sterling reputation of service to its customers and employees.

Mike started as a dockworker and learned every aspect of the business throughout his time working as a Buyer, Warehouse Manager, Vice President of Operations, and finally as Chief Operation Officer. When the company was sold in 2002, the jobs of nearly 500 employees were not affected by the sale.

Following his retirement, Mike began developing residential and commercial properties including a golf course (Fyre Lake), and innovative sleeping rooms for travelers in airports (Minute Suites). Over the last 25 years, Mike has also served on various boards of non-profit organizations throughout the Quad Cities region. Some of Mike’s roles included serving as the President of Renaissance Rock Island, a non-profit economic development organization, and as a Board Member of the following organizations: Junior Achievement, HAV Life, the YMCA, Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce, UnityPoint Health, the Putnam Museum, and more.

In search of further opportunities to serve his hometown, Mike ran for Mayor of Rock Island in 2017, citing the need for more transparency at City Hall and an emphasis on business recruitment and retention. Voters resoundingly selected Mike as their Mayor and went on to re-elect him in 2021.

As Mayor, Mike has taken a non-partisan, collaborative approach to governing, delivering efficient solutions for the city’s residents and businesses. Mike has worked with stakeholders at the local and state level to make Rock Island a welcoming and growing city. During his tenure, Rock Island has excelled in building public-private partnerships to foster growth in the community, improved communications between the City and its residents, and has charted a path forward that leverages the city’s assets and strengths to increase quality of life for all.

Mike and his wife Sara have been married for 45 years and have 3 adult children and 11 grandchildren.
